Childrens Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation
The Childrens Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation (CDHNF) was established
in July, 1998 by the leadership of the North American Society for Pediatric
Gastroenterology and Nutrition (NASPGN). The Foundations goal is to raise funds to
promote research and education that will improve the health of children with digestive and
nutritional disorders.
Mission
The mission of the Childrens Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation is:
To fund and promote research and educational programs that will advance the
creation, application, and dissemination of knowledge of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary,
pancreatic and nutritional disorders in children.
To identify, encourage, support, and coordinate scientific research and
professional study of these pediatric disorders.
To strengthen the role of pediatric gastrointestinal and nutritional scientists
as leaders in research and education in these medical and health care fields.
To evaluate and improve the quality and availability of medical care for
children with disestive disorders.
To support the research and educational programs of NASPGN.
Research Goals
New developments in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition have attracted many
talented individuals to the profession. To support and strengthen the role of pediatric
gastrointestinal and nutritional scientists as leaders in research, the CDHNF will fund
and promote the advancement of this important field of medicine.
The Foundation will develop a five-year agenda for research in childrens
digestive and nutritional disorders. At the request of the CDHNF, the North American
Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (NASPGN) has formed a task force to
identify the research needs of highest priority. The CDHNF will then use the report of the
task force to establish its agenda, which will be completed by May 1999 and will include
funding for both clinical and basic research needs. The CDHNF will seek the necessary
funds to promote and carry out this agenda and is looking forward to collaborating with
industry, lay leaders, government agencies and other foundations and organizations
committed to improving the digestive health of children.
While the major focus of the Foundation will be directed towards the five-year agenda,
the Foundation can and will offer the opportunity to work with other funded projects
related to childrens digestive diseases.
Organization & Structure
CDHNF is governed by a ten member board composed of seven members from NASPGN and three
lay members. The seven NASPGN members include the current and immediate past presidents,
the current secretary-treasurer, and four NASPGN members elected by the NASPGN Executive
Council. The four NASPGN members are chosen on the basis of their expertise and leadership
in the science and practice of pediatric gastroenterology and their willingness to
actively work with CDHNF to raise funds for research and education. The three lay members
will be chosen on the basis of their commitment to children with digestive diseases and
their ability to lend advice and fund raising expertise to the board.
The Advisory Board may include physicians or lay members who can be called upon from
time to time to assist the CDHNF in promoting research and education and in fund raising.
The CDHNF is organized exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes
as defined in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Tax deductible
status with the Internal Revenue Service is pending.
Educational Goals
The CDHNF will work with NASPGN to prioritize educational goals related to the research
agenda. Educational activities may include lectureships, symposia, and materials related
to newly developed clinical practice guidelines for pediatric gastroenterologists,
pediatricians, primary care providers and the general public.
Partners in Progress
The CDHNF is committed to raising five million dollars over the next five years in
support of research and educational programs that will help meet the needs of children
with acute and chronic digestive disorders. To accomplish this ambitious goal, the
Foundation will enlist the help of NASPGN members, corporations, foundations, and other
professional medical organizations interested in the field of pediatric gastrointestinal,
hepatobiliary, pancreatic and nutritional disorders. The foundation will look to its
corporate partners and members for leadership in seeking needed funds and encouraging
direct financial support. Participation from all entities is essential to demonstrating a
true commitment to the joint goals of CDHNF and NASPGN. To reach our five-year goal, the
foundation seeks donors at many levels. Contributions can be gifts of cash, securities or
bequests. When you give to the CDHNF you will enjoy the many benefits of giving.
What are some of the benefits of giving?
Knowing the good work your gift will do, particularly in fostering improved
health care for children.
Helping the Association build its resources to support professional research and
educational programming.
Ensuring that CDHNF will continue to fulfill its mission today and in the
future.
Joining with other members, friends in industry, and individuals who are
committed to quality health care.
Tax and income-related benefits for providing charitable gifts now and in the
future.
NASPGN and the CDHNF are pleased to announce two young investigator
grants for 1999, and other announcements.
